Cold! (T-17 weeks to Tacoma)

The last few days it's been cold here...33 / 34 F in the morning. I know that's not a big deal for those of you in the rest of the USA but for us here near San Francisco it is COLD.

Luckily I have a spouse that likes to make sure I'm clothed properly. 8)

So, I went out well prepared with my new xmas Adidas running shirt (with thumb holes) and my Mizuno gloves.

I put my  Garmin on the outside of the sleeve and went running....and I was sweating in less than a mile ;) Luckily my jacket and the shirt are unzip-able and I could air-out.s

My calf pull situation seems resolved...I've been monitoring and jacknobbering and it's gradually been getting better and better, even as I up my mileage. I don't really feel anything there anymore...but I will be really careful to monitor for any trigger points, yes-sir-ree!

The 'Chi inspired' changes to my form to relax the lower legs are working well. So I'm hopeful I'll be able to really hammer the training for Tacoma...looking forward to that!

Tacoma is 17 weeks out ...and I'm putting together a plan that is a modification of the plans that I used for CIM and Eugene. I will be shooting to do more longer tempos and pace running (and perhaps more mileage) as well as long(er) intervals and less of the short interval stuff.  Does that make any sense?

Right now I'm still doing base building....aerobic level "MAF" training (if you follow that kind of thing). This week I seem to be doing well and hope to top 30 miles which is good at this point.

This is the first time I've done a 'peaked' marathon with speedwork, etc. with my own training (sans Jill) and that makes it interesting. Hopefully my work and travel schedule will be simple..i.e. NONE. One of the great things about having a coach is that you can just say "I'm traveling to XXX on YYY for Z days...help! What to do for the schedule?"

Really hope I can ring the bell in Tacoma and prove I can re-peak again and strongly.
If I can keep sub 3:55 for CIM in 2014 it's a BQ (for age 60 Boston in 2015).

Cheers!

  1. I did my little MAF test today in a balmy 15 degrees. 33 sounds like heaven! :)

I have no doubt you'll do great on your own this round; you're smart and focused and have the experience.

    Happy New Year!

  2. Spring marathons do bring the weather challenges (although of course we E. coasters aren't TOO sympathetic of your temps!). Sounds like you have a good, solid plan in place. I'm cheering for you to BQ!

  4. I totally overdress when the weather gets extreme (which it has been this week) - hello 25 deg temps. Reminds me I need to pull out my hooded, hand covering Adidas winter top. It's perfect for the frigid runs.

  5. Not sure how cold that is but probably not as cold as here ;-)

I've been reading a lot about the Chi Running and if it works I'll stop overpronating and I'll become a mid foot runner instead of a heel striker. I'm just going to try it and see what happens. It's great that it's helping you!

I have my fingers crossed that you can keep your sub 3.55 :-)
